When Leaves Start to Fall…..

Raking leaves - fall activities for families

I think fall just might be my favorite time of year. I love the fashions; boots and sweaters are my favorite clothes. I love the food, chili and soup and yummy breads. And I love the activities! Some of my favorite memories as a child include fall activities and I am excited to create those same memories with my kids. The great thing about a lot of fall activities is they are outdoors and they tend to be very inexpensive if not free. Here are some of the activities I plan on enjoying with my girls this fall.

  • Jumping in leaves – Buy your kids some child size rakes and get to work. You will not only have fun making piles for the kids to jump in but you will burn calories while you are doing it! Last year we spent hours in our front yard jumping in a huge pile of colorful leaves and my girls still talk about it.
  • Pick you own pumpkin – This has been on my to do list for several years now and I think my girls are old enough for the adventure this year. Going to a pumpkin farm and picking your own pumpkin is a fun adventure. It usually involves a hay ride out into the field and careful scrutiny of the pumpkins by your child. Often it is cheaper to pick your own pumpkin than to buy one at a store and you get an adventure with it.
  • Apple Picking – Last year my girls went apple picking with their Nana and they had so much fun. Not to mention they came back with 3 pounds of delicious apples. My girls and I had fun making homemade applesauce, apple pie and apple cake with the delicious fresh apples. It is amazing how cheap apples are by the pound when you pick them yourself.
  • Nature Walks – Never underestimate the joy that can be found in a nature walk. Here in Ohio we get beautiful colors in the fall. My girls and I love to go for walks looking at all the colors and collecting leaves from various trees. We take them home and do all kinds of art projects.

These are just a few ways to enjoy the upcoming fall season. How will you and your family celebrate fall?

Great ideas! I think often times we forget that simple things can be so much fun! We started the tradition of the pumpkin picking two years ago and it’s something that we all look forward to each year!
