Be Classic: The Essential Pieces to Buy for Spring

By Bailey Stuvland, The Bailey Daily

As we prepare for the upcoming spring months ahead, it’s time to evaluate your closet again to make sure your outfits are in check too. In past posts, we have talked about trending pieces and how they can amplify your look when blended together with everyday basics. Basics are essential to every women’s collection as they provide the foundation. The key is to start off with the essential spring base items (or spring capsule wardrobe), so you’ll be able to layer in the statement pieces. Those statement pieces are the ones that will help you define your personal style. Below is a checklist of the essential pieces every woman should own for spring organized by category.

01.

white T-shirt

When you find the perfect white T-shirt a.k.a. the brand that you love, buy multiple. A quality white T-shirt is one of the best pieces you can own. It’s so good when it’s a little worn in, a loose fit so you can front tuck and thick enough so it’s not too sheer. If you find “your brand” make sure to buy it in other neutral colors like black and grey to add to your favorite basics collection.

02.

ribbed tank or bodysuit

A ribbed tank or bodysuit are great pieces for layering under your blazers, lightweight jackets and knits for transitioning into spring. The high neck styles are flattering and fit the 90’s trend and bodysuits are slimming with high-rise pants. Make sure you have at least one black tank, nudes and browns are good back-ups as well.

03.

white blouse

A white button up shirt in a long or short sleeve shirt is easy and effortless for spring, yet it looks chic and put together. They are so cute front tied paired with cropped denim or front tucked paired with shorts. Keep it simple and keep it classic just like this style was intended. Layer as needed.

04.

longsleeve knitwear

Lightweight sweaters are good to keep around until the weather warms up. Stick with neutral colors that you can also layer well with your white tops. Consider buying a couple pieces of knitwear, like a cashmere sweater and merino wool cardigan. These high quality knits will last you for years and are the best layering pieces for spring.

05.

high-rise straight leg jeans

The good thing about this style is that they are a flattering style and look cute with many classic looks. Skinny jeans have officially lost their reign and it’s quite refreshing to have a new jean trend take the reins. These pair well with bodysuits or those voluminous sleeve blouses we’ve been seeing on-trend. Rise high to the occasion this spring in high-rise straight leg denim.

06.

neutral trousers

Preferably trousers in a high-waist style that are following the same oversized trend. Pleats are strongly advised. Opt for a neutral colored pair specifically in khaki, tan, beige and subtle neutrals that will pair well with the rest of your spring essentials.

07.

Midi dress

The length of a midi dress is perfect because it can go dressy or casual in an instant. Try something in a classic and quality style which will not only be versatile but will also last you throughout the years. Black is a great color to start with – satins and silks are great materials to dress up or down.

08.

blazer

The blazer is an essential item to the spring capsule wardrobe. This season, the relaxed fit is in style so play up those proportions with your wide leg jeans and tee. Blazers also add a touch of sophistication over your dresses, skirts and with trousers.

09.

trench

The timeless trench is the ultimate in-between seasons go-to coat. This season the trench is seeing some modern, oversized updates on its once classic silhouette. Regardless, this jacket still spells c-l-a-s-s and makes you look polished every time. It’s an essential piece for those colder, rainy, spring days.

10.

white sneaker

Another undeniable closet essential is your fresh whites. Fresh white sneaker that is. These sneaks prove you can put effortless style on anything from slip dresses to men’s suits. A white sneaker is a must for spring, they’re a classic and they will go with everything

11.

sandals

Get yourself a pair of high quality leather sandals that are comfortable, stylish and versatile to wear with all of your outfits (i.e. Birkenstock or Tory Burch). Also, I love a great slide style as they provide so much ease by being able to slip on and off. It’s a good idea to have one good black pair and one solid brown pair that you can mix and match with your spring outfits.

12.

flats

A nice pair of mules, loafers or classic ballet flats are all great spring essentials for spring. They all have that classic ease of styling and comfort which is what a shoe should do. Creams, soft browns, cognacs and blacks work well here. Touches of gold hardware on your flats are great details too.

13.

tote bag

Normally, you would want to switch your handbag out for a lighter colored bag in the spring but that’s not necessarily the case this year. The main idea is that you choose a bag in a nice, high quality, buttery-soft leather. Colors like black, deep brown, cognac, or other neutral tones are perfect. The tote bag tops the list here as it is a classic style carry-all known for its practicality and exquisite design. You totes need to get your hands on a tote bag this season!

Fashionably,
