Be Current: Spring Fashion Trends 2021

By Bailey Stuvland, The Bailey Daily
We have officially reached the halfway point of the winter season! Like most everything in life, I like to plan ahead especially when it comes to next season’s fashion trends. I, like many of you, am ready to remove the bulky layers in exchange for some light and airy spring-forward pieces. Springtime is a season of renewal which is also the best time to refresh your wardrobe with new updates. So, here are some of the top fashion trends for spring 2021 that you’ll want to know today!

01.
florals
“Florals? For Spring? Groundbreaking.” -Miranda Priestly
Ok, but in a way, I would feel gypped if florals did not make it on the list of spring trends. Floral prints, especially dresses, equals spring to me. However, these aren’t your average, dainty, pastel florals. Many designers took this trend to the next level by mixing head-to-toe florals or in the boldest floral shades you can ever imagine. Lots of neons, yellows and loud prints. So, it could be considered groundbreaking, Miranda.
02.
trench coats
I have always considered the trench coat the epitome of the essential item for spring and fall. Probably because I associate it with a classy, upscale raincoat. This spring the timeless belted khaki trench has been redesigned with modern details like bold shoulders and slouchy fits. Or with super cinched waists, over-exaggerated lapels or off shoulder styles. There are quite a variety of unusual styles all across the board but there’s one thing that is consistent. These unconventional trench coats are definitely statement pieces which are a whole vibe this spring.
03.
big jeans
Baggy jeans, skater jeans, loose-fit jeans, balloon jeans, jogger jeans – the more volume your jeans have, the more on-trend you’ll be. I’m loving this style, especially the jogger jean style because not only are they roomy, but they are comfortable as well. I hate to admit it but I ’m not quite ready to say good-bye to my sweats yet and this is like the perfect transition piece. It’s like taking your sweat pants and turning them into a socially acceptable pair that you can wear outside of the house. I can’t wait to style them with tees and sneakers this spring or dress them up with booties and blazers. Such a cool and versatile trend which also transitions well into spring.
04.
Neons
Bright, bold, neon hues were consistent across the board. Do you think quite possibly because color will lift the spirits and we need a little mood booster? Well, I think it works. So, go on and get happy by dressing up in electric greens, bubblegum pinks, blues, you name it. Go monochrome or pair different colored brights together to get the look. The bolder the better. Bubblegum pink hues are having a major moment in fashion which prove this is going to be huge this spring/summer. Make sure and add some form of this bright pink hue to your collection.

05.
bold shoulders
Overemphasize your shoulders in some of this season’s most extreme designs yet. We saw a hint of oversized proportions last season but it appears that this trend has become a wardrobe mainstay. Especially exaggerated shoulders and sleeves. What’s not to love about them either? They are uber-unique and fancy. This time around they truly make a statement. Whether that’s the soft elegance and femininity of a lavender sheer puffed sleeved blouse or hardcore pointed shoulders of a dark green crocodile leather cropped jacket. Some are even origami-like. They come in all different shapes and sizes which makes this trend so unique.
06.
trousers
Classic khaki pants, or as my grandma calls them her “tans”, are going high-fashion this season. This trend follows suit with the many other trends we are seeing this season – the oversized trend. Wide legs, pleats and lots of volume. The trouser trend takes on casual, slouchy vibes when paired with oversized blazers for an ironic business casual look. Otherwise opt for feminine ruffle blouses, tailored sweater vests, graphic tees and the like as all are considered a go this spring.
07.
sheers
Sheer overlays are also trending for spring. Which is basically the lightest, airiest of fabrics you can get if you’re trying to shed your bulky winter coat. If you want to rock this trend on the subtle end, opt for a cute organza cocoon sleeve or sheer top. Bralettes are also a big trending item, so layering sheer tops and high-waisted pants is a very modern look. On the opposite end of the spectrum you can wear a sheer dress as a fancy gown or as an extravagant beach cover-up. The purpose of these pieces is for layering which can look really lovely when styled correctly.

other trends to watch
Be on the lookout for: statement collars, athletic jackets, cut-outs, open backs, monochrome, spring knits, metallic, crochet, sequins, statement belts, pastels and fashion face masks.

Happy spring shopping, everyone!

Fashionably,
Bailey
