How To Install Removable Wallpaper

Have you ever tried to put up traditional wallpaper using paste or glue? It’s not an easy task, that’s for sure. Peel-and-stick wallpaper offers an affordable, DIY-friendly alternative to freshen up your space without having to use paint or glue. Temporary décor allows you to get creative on surfaces besides your walls, too — vinyl decals can be used on any smooth surfaces, such as stairs, furniture and tile floors. The simple, self-adhesive design can be repositioned or removed without causing damage. And best of all, most DIY wallpaper projects can be completed in a single day!

Peel-and-Stick Wallpaper

While the installation process for removable wallpaper requires less legwork than traditional wallpapers, you’ll still need to do a little prep work to ensure it adheres properly to your wall. Peel-and-stick wallpaper adheres best to surfaces with an eggshell, satin, or semi-gloss finish or another smooth texture. Definitely check the manufacturer’s instructions before starting your project, to ensure the product you choose will adhere properly to your desired surface. Follow these easy step-by-step instructions to install removable wallpaper, wall decals, or peel-and-stick floor tiles in your home.

  • Measuring tape or yardstick
  • Sponge or clean cloth rags
  • Step ladder
  • Pencil
  • Peel-and-stick product (wallpaper, decals, borders, etc.)
  • Plastic smoothing tool
  • Straight edge
  • Utility knife or razor
  • Level

Step by Step Instructions to install peel-and-stick wallpaper

STEP 1: Measure

Measure the height and width your wall (or designated surface) to determine how many rolls of material you’ll need. Remember – measure twice to be safe.

STEP 2: Prepare your surface(s)

Turn off the power, then remove all switch faceplates and socket covers. Gently remove dirt and dust from walls with a damp sponge or cloth.

STEP 3: Make Guides

Using your level, draw a straight vertical line with a pencil as a guide to line up the wallpaper.

STEP 4: Cut

Remember to allow an extra inch or two for trimming both the top and bottom edges. Cut and trim product with a razor or utility knife.

STEP 5: Apply wallpaper

Peel back about 12” and apply the paper to the top of the wall, allowing a bit of excess to overlap the ceiling. Work from top to bottom to pull the backing away as you press the paper to the wall. Be careful not to pull, force, or stretch the paper. Repeat with remaining sheets. If you encounter a window, door frame, or outlet, continue the pattern and let the wallpaper overlap it.

STEP 5: Smooth Surface

Using a plastic smoother, smooth down the material and push out any air bubbles toward the edges.

STEP 6: Trim

Trim off excess material at the ceiling and baseboards using a sharp razor or utility knife. Now take a step back and admire your work!
