Motherhood: The Job, the Joys

Motherhood: The Job, the Joys

In celebration of Mother’s Day this month, we reached out to some amazing moms who also happen to be incredible businesswomen. We asked them what they have learned from motherhood, how they’ll guide their kids and how they take time for themselves. Here’s what they had to say.

What does being a mom on Mother’s Day mean to you?

To be able to celebrate a term, ‘mother,’ that has many definitions to many people, but a single universal feeling – warmth and love – is pretty awesome. I am grateful to know motherhood as a mother and as a daughter.

Juggling four kids and a business (and quarantine!) can get pretty tricky, but no matter how crazy things get,… I couldn’t imagine this journey without them.  We’re all in it together.

What do you do when you need some treat-yourself time?

… a girl’s night out with friends… no kids, no husband, just drinks and laughs with some wonderful women.

… a nice run outside is my favorite by far.

What is one piece of advice you have given (or will you give) to your kids?

In this day and age, I think it is so easy to get caught up in “compare culture.” I want to encourage my children to really listen to their own voices and seek out what they truly love and enjoy, even if it might not be the popular choice. That, and to always make time for their mom!

Above all else be kind. The most important thing to me is that my kids grow up to be nice people.

From Mothers to Daughters

My mother told me that motherhood is a job for a lifetime. It never stops, you’re never done, and you can never give up.  Remember, home is wherever mom is.

Nomad Footwear company is a family affair, with Iris Mou and her daughters Molly (new mom to Mason, 13 months) and Jessica (18-month-old Paige’s mom) on board. Here’s advice they’ve learned and shared.

IRIS: Be passionate with whatever you do. Have a kind heart. Read and desire all kinds of knowledge.  Always think positive. Four steps in dealing with any problem:  face it, accept it, deal with it, let it go.

MOLLY: My mom has taught me that with hard work and perseverance, everything is possible.

JESSICA: My mom has taught me so much, but what I have learned most from her is simply watching her do, and not say.

My mom always taught me to follow my dreams and that being successful means doing what you love, not how much money you make. This is important advice for creative people!

Tara Brown, mom to Mischa (12) and Kai (26), founder of Mind’s Eye Design

Founder Mary Ragon and her daughter, Carrie, are two of Ragon House’s three owners – and a charming mother-daughter duo. When asked about special Mother’s Day traditions, here’s how they replied.

MARY: My kids happen to love my roast beef and potatoes recipe!

CARRIE: My mom makes the best roast beef and potatoes! It’s something I make for my family now and I just taught my daughter how to make this the other day! It’s always fun sharing recipes from grandma and being able to pass those favorite recipes down to my own kids.

Wishing all the best to our amazing community – from these and all the moms of Zulily!
