How Millennial Moms Really Feel About New Motherhood

How Millennial Moms Really Feel About New Motherhood

New data from Zulily reveals perceptions of becoming a new mom and what moms really want this Mother’s Day.

As Mother’s Day approaches and families begin planning celebrations for the moms in their lives, Zulily has launched a 12-week long Mother’s Day Shop celebration from March 10 – May 31. This one-stop-shop features Mother’s Day gifts for her, as well as reasons for moms to treat themselves for being the big deal they are for not just a day, but an entire Mother’s Day season.

Mother’s Day is a classic example of how moms typically take the lead when it’s their special day. Millions of moms across the country are highly involved in the planning and execution of their own celebration, according to data gathered by Zulily. And 65% of moms say they’re also the ones cleaning up the breakfast-in-bed surprises.

Zulily knows mothers should be celebrated more than in a moment, and that families should embrace and commemorate these heroes of their homes in a movement. And so, Zulily is issuing a challenge to moms to take a “break” and lean into the showering of love and recognition their family wants to provide this Mother’s Day.

Other key discoveries uncovered in Zulily’s national survey includes moms’ thoughts on shopping and gifting, support systems, speaking their minds and more.

Can you relate to any of the results?

…Being Prepared for Motherhood

For new moms, 2022 is The Year of “We Got This.” Moms have gone through a lot since 2020, and the silver lining has been discovering the value of getting to spend extra quality time with family at home. As a result of all this time at home, it seems that new moms are feeling more up for the task. A new nationwide survey of 1,000 Millennial moms conducted by Zulily revealed that moms with newborns and toddlers are feeling more prepared for motherhood compared to moms with preschool-aged kids.

…Mother’s Day Gifts

With more moms embracing their “fourth trimester” and giving themselves the time and space to prepare and acclimate to being a new mom, both mentally and physically, it’s no surprise that many first-time moms (16%) look forward to having a day dedicated to themselves, and plan to spend the holiday celebrating becoming a mom with their kids and family.

When it comes to Mother’s Day gifting, more moms are leaving the work to the gift-givers.

  • Over half of moms (52%) are not giving hints ahead of the holiday
  • The majority (78%) like to be surprised with a gift.

…Their Social Media Village

Moms reported feeling more supported by online society than from their families. In fact, 72% of moms said they felt supported by society for the most part when they became a new mom.

…Asking for Help

Moms are finding their voices and speaking up to share how they need to be supported by loved ones ahead of Mother’s Day this year. Sixty-eight percent of moms shared they proactively communicate the best way to be supportive.

…Online Shopping

It’s retail therapy, but in the palm of your hand. Moms are saying “yes” to shopping as a positive outlet and are opting for better bargains online. Data revealed that 48% of moms say they shop online way more now than they did before becoming a mom. They also see shopping as a positive outlet, saying:

  • It’s fun and makes them feel better (46%)
  • Serves as a self-reward (43%)
  • Acts as retail therapy (35%)
